Learners progress from primary school, continuing to study Social Studies Experiences and Outcomes. Most learners progress at Levels 3 and 4. In S1 and S2 learners follow a combined course, and at the end of S2 they can opt to specialise into discreet subjects to prepare them for progression into the Senior Phase in S4.

S1

  • Natural Hazards – a how, why, where, when look at earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes and tsunamis
  • Slavery and Scotland – the link between slavery and Scotland’s growth in the 18th century
  • The USA –The people, political system, inequalities and the right to bear arms
  • Scottish Wars of Independence – Causes of the wars, the rise of Wallace and Bruce
  • Democracy v Dictatorship – Pupils study the origins of democracy, participation and compare it to countries and people who live under dictatorships

S2

  • An unequal world – A study of inequalities across the world in the 21st century
  • The Great War – Causes of WW1,  propaganda, new technology and life in the trenches
  • Media  - how we are informed, social media, the rise of  ‘fake news’
  • Power and Conflict – The rise of the Nazis, the Holocaust, the end of war, Hiroshima
  • Human rights – Rights all humans should enjoy, the UHDR and CRC, songs of protest.
